Fall 2002 grant recipients:
Cognitive Connections for Kids Program - Hathaway Elementary
To partially fund the Cognitive Connections for Kids Program that provides enriched extended learning activities
for students before and after school. Areas of involvement include Choir, Chess Club, Community Service, Student
Leadership, and Student Newspaper.
Algebra is Child's Play - Hathaway Elementary
To purchase math manipulatives for two fourth grade classrooms to be used in conjunction with a hands-on math
program called Algebra is Child's Play. This program is designed for students to be actively engaged during math
lessons involving essential algebraic concepts. Math skills will develop and improve through critical and
analytical thinking.
NovaNet system - Hi-Cap Washougal Middle Schools
To fund a pilot program for 2002/2003 school year allowing advanced middle school math students an opportunity to work
at their own accelerated paces using the NovaNet system at Excelsior High School. The participating students work on
Algebra or Geometry through the interactive on-line program.
Musical Instruments - Cape Horn-Skye Elementary
To partially fund the purchase of musical instruments for the general music class allowing all students at
Cape Horn-Skye Elementary to be actively involved in "making" music.
By-lines for Students - Jemtegaard Middle School
To fund the By-lines for Students program that provided an opportunity for journalism students in the
newspaper production class to publish their work in a student-run newspaper. In addition to writing, the
program includes all facets of producing a newspaper, managing a staff, assigning stories, interviewing people,
taking pictures, editing, and evaluating the final product.
Portable Backdrop - Community Member
To fund the building of a portable backdrop to be used for various school and community programs and theatrical productions.
This backdrop has already been used at Canyon Creek Middle School, CapeHorn-Skye Elementary, and the Washougal Schools Foundation.
Funds enabled this community member to enhance the structure so it is now more durable, easily portable, and safer for the students.
Any school in the WSD that has a need for a portable presentation prop will be able to use this structure.
Family Science Night - Parent
To partially fund Family Science Night, a district-wide science activity event held at Gause School.
The Science Night format allows elementary students to participate in a variety of innovative and
creative hands-on science experiments.
Critter Keepers - Cape Horn-Skye
To fund the inclusion of Critter Keepers into the Cape Horn-Skye's classroom study of insects. Students
were actively involved in building their "Critter Keeper", then be able to collect insects from the school
grounds and place in their "Critter Keeper" for an up close view of a bugs life.
