Fall 2003 grant recipients:

Family Science Night - All elementary schools To partially fund the district-wide science activity event held at Gause Elementary School. The Science Night format allows elementary students (and parents) to participate in a variety of innovative and creative hands-on science experiments.
The Bug Lady Presentation - Gause Elementary This presentation is the culminating activity to the first grades' two-month long insect curriculum. The Bug Lady Presentation covers such area as insect diversity, insect characteristics, exoskeletons, insect population, types, and insect body parts. After the two 1-hour presentations, students are allowed to view the Bug Lady's bug collection, ask questions, and learn more about the bugs that interest them.
School House Creek Enhancement Environmental Project - Canyon Creek Middle School The Environmental Projects class at CCMS will participate in an ongoing study of flora, fauna, and abiotic factors affecting the health of the ecosystems along School House Creek. With the WSF funds, students will be able to conduct a variety of water quality tests including ph, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, phosphorous, nitrates, and fecal coliform. The information gathered by the students will be among the materials compiled and presented at a "Congress" of students throughout Southwest Washington at the Water Resources Education Center in Vancouver.
Horns for Hathaway - Hathaway Elementary Hathaway Elementary School now offers beginning band for fifth grade students. The WSF funds will be used to buy a flute, a trumpet, and two clarinets. These "Hathaway Horns" will be used by children in fifth-grade whose families do not have the financial means to buy an instrument. The students will learn to read music and play the instrument in beginning band. They will attend rehearsal before school and will participate in two concerts presented to the community during the school year.
Look Out Gause, Thar It Blows! - Gause Elementary Gause has been offering beginning band for the last three years. Students are required to provide their own instruments and books, which has proven to exclude some students due to individual financial constraints. The WSF funds will provide instruments for several students on a yearly basis. This program gives students, who otherwise would not be able to participate, an opportunity to learn to play an instrument in the before school class and perform in concerts for the community.
Literary Arts Magazine and Coffeehouse Poetry Night - Jemtegaard Middle School
The eighth grade Language Arts block class will produce and distribute a Literary Magazine comprised of individual student's poetry, short stories, essays, and artwork created throughout the year. This will be combined with an end of year Coffeehouse Poetry night for parents and students where students will have an opportunity to publicly share their favorite writings to an "authentic audience". These two activities add to the normal classroom curriculum by encouraging creativity and publicly recognizing students' efforts and knowledge of the various genres of writing.
The Express Newspaper Production Project - Jemtegaard Middle School
Funding of this project will provide an opportunity for journalism students in the newspaper production class to publish their work in a student-run newspaper. In addition to writing, the program includes all facets of producing a newspaper, managing a staff, assigning stories, interviewing people, taking pictures, editing, and evaluating the final product. WSF funds will cover purchase of 11 X 17 paper and printing costs for six issues. Note: Although a similar project was funded by WSF last year, the proposed publication timeline was constrained by the JMS schedule. As a result, only $168 of the originally requested $420 was used, leaving the remainder to revert back to the WSF. The JMS schedule has since been changed.
Outdoor School - Canyon Creek Middle School
The Outdoor School is an activity based field study of the wetland behind CCMS. Students actively study components of the habitat and habitat restoration. Outdoor school relates directly with the sixth grade science curriculum involving environments and environmental factors.
Facilitating Special Education Inclusion in General Education Classes - Hathaway Elementary and Special Services
The WSF grant will partially fund a software program that will enrich the quality of the educational experience for children with significant learning difficulties. Students will use visual and tactile input to learn key concepts in communication, reading, math, and writing. With picture-supported text, students can understand the contents of stories and lessons and become active learners in inclusive or self-contained environments. This will enable children with challenges to participate on a more equal footing with typical students.
