Fall 2004 grant recipients:

Environmental and Physics Class Projects - Canyon Creek Middle School
To fund supplies for water quality testing kits used in the Environmental Projects class. The information gathered by the students will be among the materials compiled and presented at a "Congress" of students throughout Southwest Washington at the Water Resources Education Center in Vancouver. This award will also fund supplies for a Science Projects class where students will be actively engaged in constructing objects like bridges, cars, and boats, using the principles and laws of science and physics.
Phonological and Phonemic Awareness Program - Hathaway Elementary
This intervention program will target the students struggling the most with reading at the K-2 level. Phonological awareness skills will be developed on an individual and small group basis with emphasis on teaching pre-reading skills in rhyming, sound segmentation, and identifying beginning and ending sounds. The grant money will be used to buy materials to teach the pre-reading and reading skills needed in order for the student to participate in other school funded literacy intervention programs.
Young Authors Workshop - Cape Horn-Skye Elementary and Canyon Creek Middle School
The funds will bring children's author Deborah Hopkinson, to the school for a day of reading and writing. She will share several of her books and explain how she gets her ideas for writing. In two assemblies, she will take students through the process of how an idea becomes a finished book. She will also meet with advanced student writers in a mini-workshop format.
Mural Painting Workshop - Canyon Creek Middle School
A community member will teach a group of students how to plan for, sketch, and paint three 5ft by 8ft murals, which will be displayed in the CCMS/CHS library. Students will be introduced to murals painted by famous artists from around the world. A local professional muralist will be invited to show her work and teach the students painting techniques. The WSF funds will be used to buy art supplies, fund photo documentation of the mural process, and fund visits by the professional muralist.
X-SC-TATIONS (Excellent Science Presentations) - Gause Elementary
This presentation is the culminating activity to the first grades' two-month long insect curriculum. Ms. Brenda Dobbs, a.k.a. The Bug Lady will present to all first grade students at Gause Elementary. Her presentation will cover areas such as anatomy, growth, behavior, and unusual facts. She will also display her bug collection of over 400 exotic and native insects, answer questions and talk more about the bugs that interest the students.
Career Day Key Note Speaker - Canyon Creek Middle School
The WSF funds will be used to bring motivational speaker Mike Miller to CCMS as the Career Day keynote speaker. Mr. Miller specializes in talking to, and about teens. He will address the entire student body and staff. He will provide a powerful presentation on self-esteem, designed to target how students feel about themselves how they treat each other. Students will be challenged to take a look at their future and to see themselves as successful.
